gauging user competence: a helpful case study

My attention was drawn today to this amazing thread on "How to delete your Yahoo! account," in which the poster offers a very simple explanation of, surprise, how to delete your yahoo account.

Amazingly, it is followed by 232 comments (so far), the majority of which are mindless requests for him to delete arbitrary yahoo accounts. An example:

I want to delete my account, but I dont know how,?can you please delete my account cause i wanna change it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ppppppppllllllllsssssssssssssssssss……

- Jenin

It's tough to say much more about this, because it is just so astounding. The only thing more surprising than all of the idiots who can't figure out the simple instructions is the occasional response from someone else trying to explain it again... as if further explanation will somehow bring clarity to the masses.

Anyway. I think that I'll use this thread as a counterexample anytime one of my interfaces gets blamed for a user getting confused. Some users are just incompetent, end of story.
